Can I pay by Credit Card or EFTPOS?

The Centre has a credit card and EFTPOS facility, but not all our therapists are set up to use it.  Please check availability when making your appointment.  Cash or cheque payments are otherwise accepted.  All our therapists require that you pay the amount due at the end of each session, unless a prior arrangement has already been made to bill your employer or workers compensation insurer.

What if I can’t make my appointment?

If you give 48 hours notice of a cancellation, your appointment can be rescheduled without a cancellation fee being charged.  If you give between 24 and 48 hours notice, a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the normal counselling fee for the session will be charged. If you give less than 24 hours notice, or simply fail to turn up for a session, then the full fee will be charged.  Any cancellation fees owing need to be paid at, or prior to, your next session.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

If your counselling is to be supported by Medicare, you will need a referral from your doctor, and they will also need to create an approved treatment plan for you.  If you know which of our psychologists you would prefer to see, please call the psychologist first to ensure they will be able make an appointment at a time which suits you and then advise the referring doctor of your choice. If Medicare rebates are not required then you will not need a referral from your doctor.  Simply call to make an appointment.  Referrals are also not needed in order to claim rebates or refunds from your private health insurance fund.

Will my counselling costs be covered by my health fund?

Psychologists at the Centre are registered with a wide range of health funds.  Check with your private health cover provider to see if your package includes psychological counselling and how to make a claim. Our massage therapist is also registered with most major health funds and refunds can be claimed if therapeutic massage is included in your cover.

Will my Counselling costs be covered by Medicare?

Under the new Medicare scheme introduced in November 2006, rebates are now available for psychological counselling.  In order to be eligible for a rebate, you must be eligible for the scheme and referred by your GP, your psychiatrist or a paediatrician. Your GP will need to complete a detailed mental health assessment and prepare a Mental Health Care Plan before referring you to a psychologist. You should book a longer session with your GP to enable time for this.  Generally, you will receive a $75 rebate per session (for up to 12 sessions per year) under the scheme, with higher rates available for services provided by a Clinical Psychologist.  No rebate is applicable for discounted sessions provided by our intern psychologists.  For more information, download the Medicare information consumer facts sheet from the Australian Psychological Society via http://www.psychology.org.au/Assets/Files/Medicare_Fact_Sheet1.pdf

What should I do if I am not covered by a health fund or eligible for Medicare and cannot afford to

Our intern psychologists are available to see you at a further discounted rate.  This can be as low as $75 per 50-minute session.  Although interns are not yet fully registered psychologists, they have completed an approved degree and post-graduate qualification in psychology, and the quality of their work is assured through an individually tailored supervision program, which has been approved by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board.

Does the cost of counselling include GST?

No.  In most instances, psychological counselling is not subject to GST.  If, however, your counselling is being paid for by your employer, or is work related (such as when you intend to claim it as a work related tax deduction) then GST will need to be added, but only if your therapist is registered for GST.  If your counselling is work related or being paid for by your employer, please advise your therapist when making an appointment so they can determine if GST will apply.

Is the cost of my counselling tax deductible?

If your counselling relates to work related issues such as stress, employment issues etc. you may be entitled to claim a deduction.  Please contact a taxation professional to determine if this is the case.  If you intend claiming a deduction, please inform your counsellor, as they may need to add GST to the normal fee.  You cannot claim a tax deduction for counselling that is also subject to a Medicare rebate claim.

Can I choose any therapist for my Worker’s Compensation claim?

If the cost of your counselling is being paid by an Insurance company under a workers compensation claim, then the Insurance Company must approve the therapist it will pay to see you.  Some of the therapists at the Centre are registered with Insurance companies for this kind of work and are experienced in workers compensation cases.  Use the ‘select a therapist’ tool on the therapists page to see details of these practitioners.  You should contact the relevant insurer prior to making an appointment.  some therapists prefer not to take on Worker’s Compensation cases so please advise them if your counselling will be subject to a claim.

How many sessions of counselling will I need?

Your therapist will make a diagnosis during your first few sessions and discuss this issue with you.  A course of counselling is normally set for between 6 and 12 sessions, and is reviewed on an ongoing basis.

How often will I need to see my therapist?

This will be determined in discussion with your therapist during the first session.  Normally, a session every two, three or four weeks is recommended.

Is the Randwick Psychology Centre accessible to people with reduced mobility?

Due to heritage constraints on the building access for people with reduced mobility to our top floor suite is not currently available.  Some of out therapists do offer an outreach service and will visit you in your home or in another location should accessibility issues prevent you from visiting the centre.  Search for ‘outreach’ on the therapists page to identify these practitioners.

Is telephone counselling available?

While the Centre is not a telephone counselling facility, our therapists may choose to arrange a session with established or mobility impaired clients over the telephone. Telephone sessions are charged in line with the usual rates. Please make individual inquiries with your psychologist about telephone counseling options.

What should I do between appointments?

Psychology is a field where the therapist and the client work together to improve the client’s mental health.  This may require tasks and activities for you to do between sessions to get the most out of your course of therapy.

Is my counselling confidential?

Your therapist will not discuss any aspect of your counselling with anyone without your permission, except in very specific circumstances as set out in guidelines provided by the Australian Psychological Society and the NSW Psychologists Registration Board, where required by law and in discussion with your GP if you have been referred with a GPs Treatment Plan.
